BPC-157: A Research Spotlight

BPC-157, or Body Protection Compound-157, is a synthetic pentadecapeptide derived from a protective protein found in human gastric juice. It has become one of the most-studied research peptides in the last decade due to its breadth of activity in pre-clinical tissue-repair models.

Origin

First isolated from gastric juice in the early 1990s, BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid sequence (Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val) that does not occur naturally on its own; it is a fragment of a parent body-protection protein.

Mechanism of interest (in vitro)

Pre-clinical literature explores BPC-157's interaction with the nitric oxide system, growth-hormone receptor expression, and modulation of pro-angiogenic factors (VEGFR-2). These pathways are central to the wound-healing response, which is why BPC-157 is so frequently the subject of musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal injury models.
